I'm A Fellow at the Center For Pastor Theologians
And I'm super excited š¤
An Announcement:
Iām pleased to announce that beginning this fall I will be a fellow at the Center for Pastor Theologians. Iām really excited š.
For those of you whoāve been following my Pastoral Theology Substack for a while, you might remember that Iāve written a couple of pieces about my experiences at CPTās annual conference. Iāll link the two articles at the bottom of this postāall positive, of course.
Part of what thrills me about this opportunity is that it meshes so perfectly with what Iāve been doing on this Substack for the last several years. Theology belongs in the local church, and the local church belongs in theology. Itās not as if most church leaders donāt believe that, but few are putting it into practice and making it the center of their work like CPT is.
What is the CPT?
Hereās what they say about they Center for Pastor Theologians in their own words:
The Center for Pastor Theologians is an interdenominational evangelical organization that gathers pastors and church leaders for fellowship, continuing education, and spiritual formation. Our goal is to see a Church that is firmly rooted through pastors who are theologically formed.
The Center for Pastor Theologians is a theologically orthodox, Protestant Evangelical organization in the evangelical movement. Our programs gather pastors and ministry leaders from a wide array of Protestant traditions, all of which share distinctives like a high view of Scriptureās authority, evangelistic urgency, and an emphasis on the cross of Christ
What will I do as a Fellow?
Again, hereās what they say about the fellowship in their own words:
Welcome to the Center for Pastor Theologians Fellows Program. This six-year program offers a unique, theologically robust environment for pastors and ministry leaders who have advanced theological education, supporting them in their ministry as they are formed into the identity of the pastor theologian.
The goals of the Fellows Program are threefold:
1) Create interdenominational fellowship and deep relational bonds within the pastoral community.
2) Deliver excellent ongoing education and professional development for highly qualified pastor theologians.
3) Provide spiritual formation and mentorship for early- and mid-career pastors from seasoned pastor theologians.
Youāre invited
Finally, keep in mind that the Center for Pastor Theologianās conference is once again happening this October in Oak Park, ILāand youāre invited. Church leaders and thoughtful laity alike will find it to be a refreshing, invigorating, and encouraging event. We pray, we sing, and we think together in both plenary and breakout sessions. You can click here for more info about it. Donāt hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions about my experience there.
Am I an Evangelical?
Last week I attended the Center for Pastor Theologians annual conference, this year themed āReconstructing Evangelicalism.ā It was an incredible experience. Plenary speakers like Russell Moore, Kristen Kobes Du Mez, and the National Association of Evangelicals
Praying for the End of America
Every time we pray the Lordās Prayer, weāre praying for the end of America. To ask for Godās kingdom to come is to ask for the United States and, for that matter, every nation, to vanish. The Scriptures promise us that God will be all in all on the Last Day. The government will be upon his shoulders because he, and he alone, is the Everlasting Father.

Congratulations! Iāve been following the CPT for years and love their work. While leadership, vision, and nonprofit management cannot be overlooked or discarded, it is theology that drives the churchās work, and we need more pastors deeply rooted in theology so their churches arenāt a mile wide and an inch deep.
Congrats, Joseph! I was a student fellow back in seminary, and Iām hoping to help start up a Local Theologian Cohortāhopefully sooner rather than later.
